Postby Josh Goodman » Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:54 am

FB2008_04 is scheduled for release on Friday April 25th, 2008. Should the planned date change this thread will be updated.

As part of the release process the public Chado database will be unavailable from approximately 9am-4pm EDT. You may also
experience small hiccups with the website as the new release is rolled out.

Josh,

Should we expect this to be called "Release 5.7"?

Can you give us any idea what we might expect to see changing.

Are there any new large changes in gene annotation forthcoming?

I ask because I note that there are very few changes in the gene annotation between Release 5.5 and 5.6. and wonder if the change to 5.7 might be similarly as small in this regard.

Thanks,

Malcolm Cook

Hi Malcom,

Release 5.7 will have a similar number of changes from 5.6 as 5.6 had from 5.5. There are about 10 major gene model changes (gene merges, splits, or new genes). There are also about 150 additional gene models which were modified in a more subtle way (changes to transcript extent, addition of a transcript or delete of a transcript).

Cheers,

Hi Malcolm,

To expand a little on Susan's reply when considering all the sequenced genomes the next update will contain annotation release 5.7 for melanogaster, 2.2 for pseudoobscura, 1.1 for virilis and 1.2 for the other sequenced species. The scale of changes in Drosophila melanogaster is likely to be similar to that between 5.5 and 5.6. As we are updating approximately monthly the changes to melanogaster annotations are unlikely to be large although I guess that depends on how you quantify large. Between release 5.5 and 5.6 we added 102 new protein coding transcripts. From Susan's note it looks as if release 5.7 will be similar. Changes to the other species annotations will be on a fairly small scale and have primarily been driven by suspect computational annotations of very short coding regions or that spanned large gaps although we will have added hundreds of non-coding RNA models for the non-mel species in this release.
