Postdoctoral position in tissue regeneration

Postdoctoral Position available at the University of Virginia, Department of Cell Biology studying Tissue Regeneration and Neoplasia in Drosophila

A Post-doctoral position is currently available for a highly motivated scientist looking to progress to an independent position, to study tissue regeneration using the highly tractable model system, Drosophila melanogaster. This position will be within the laboratory of Dr. Adrian Halme at the Department of Cell Biology, University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Our laboratory is combining genetic, molecular, and advanced microscopy techniques to examine the molecular, cellular, and neuroendocrine signaling pathways that are activated by larval imaginal tissue damage and contribute to tissue repair and regeneration. We have recently developed a genetic screen that has identified mutations that specifically inhibit the regenerative growth of imaginal tissues. Research projects are available to identify and characterize the genetic pathways that regulate imaginal tissue regeneration as well as to specifically examine a developmental checkpoint that preserves regenerative capacity upon tissue damage.

In addition we have identified mutations that produce neoplastic tumors in response to tissue damage. Therefore, as seen in human cancers, interactions between genetic (mutation) and environmental (damage and/or repair) factors within a tissue can contribute to loss of tissue integrity and neoplastic tumor development in Drosophila tissues. Research projects are also available to study this Drosophila model for tumor formation in order to understand how the complex interactions between tissue damage and mutation lead to tumor development.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology or a related field. Candidates should have experience in modern molecular biology techniques and should also be comfortable using genetic approaches to test biological function. Candidates with experience working with Drosophila will be preferred.
