A postdoc position (3 years) is available in the research group of Dr. Annette Schenck at the Department of Human Genetics at the Nijmegen Centre of Molecular Life Science (NCMLS) - Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour - Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre in Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
The Department of Human Genetics in Nijmegen is a world-leading place for research into genetic forms of brain disorders, where clinical research, disease gene identification and functional studies work hand in hand. Using disease genes as a molecular window and Drosophila as a primary research tool, we dissect gene function, molecular networks and mechanisms that underlie brain development and cognition and aim to translate this knowledge back to humans.
We aim to systematically elucidate the function of genes implicated human Intellectual Disability Disorders. More than 300 genes are conserved in fly will be investigated for their role in Drosophila learning using RNAi and an innovative high-throughput system to measure jump-reflex habituation (collaboration with Dr. Z. Asztalos/Aktogen Ltd, Cambridge). Proof of principle that Intellectual Disability genes can affect this form of learning has been provided (Ref 1, Kramer et al. PLoS Biol. 2011). In addition, our lab already generated extensive phenotype datasets and innovative tools that can be used by the successful candidate to follow up on the most interesting phenotypes and genes, e.g. by dissection of associated signalling pathways, identification of transcriptional targets and protein partners, by proteomics and by the identification of genetic or chemical modifiers that alleviate learning or other defects. The goal of our large scale research is to identify novel molecular networks that provide conceptual advance in our understanding of brain development in health and disease. We also aim to significantly contribute to the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for the large and still growing group of MR disorders.
The project is funded through the European Union’s large-scale FP7 network GenCoDys (Genetic and Epigenetic Networks in Cognitive Dysfunction). Partners of the Drosophila work package are A. Schenck (WP leader); K. Keleman/B.J. Dickson (Vienna); P. Tomancak (Dresden); Z. Asztalos/Aktogen Ltd (Cambridge). The postdoc will intensively profit from the unique expertise of Dr. Asztalos with high-throughput habituation and is invited to actively participate in the activities of the consortium.
• A PhD in a domain of Molecular Life Sciences
• Strong background in Drosophila genetics, and ideally in neurobiology, good knowledge in molecular and cell biology
• high affinity for fundamental research related to human disease
• Highly motivated, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and with the strong wish to work interdisciplinary.
