One open post-doctoral position
Professor Bertrand Mollereau
“Apoptosis and Neurogenetics” LBMC
Ecole Normale Supérieure of Lyon, France
Apoptosis is a form of physiological cell death that is essential for normal development and homeostasis. Apoptosis needs to be tightly regulated, and its deregulation may lead to cancer (lack of apoptosis) or degeneration (excess of apoptosis).
To study the mechanisms controlling cell death in a terminally differentiated neuron, we have established a neurodegenerative model in differentiated Drosophila photoreceptor cells (PRs). We conducted a dominant modifier screen of dp53-induced PR death. Using a P-element lethal collection, we have isolated 31 candidate genes, in which mutations enhance or suppress dp53-induced cell death. Among those genes, we have characterized the role of cytochrome-c-d in the regulation of apoptosis in the retina (Mendes et al. 2006). We are pursuing the characterization of the genes isolated in the screen with a particular focus on the roles of oxidative and endoplasmic reticulum stresses on apoptosis.
Salary will be covered by the FRM program.
About the Institute: The École Normale Supérieure (ENS) is well known in France and has a solid international reputation among leading scientific institutions, making it a top choice for graduate students and post-docs. The ENS is also a nationally renowned teaching Institution. With its very competitive national entry exam, the ENS Lyon selects outstanding undergraduate and graduate students. About the city: Located in the center of Europe, Lyon is the second French biggest city, 2 hours south of Paris by TGV (fast train), 2 hours from Italy or Switzerland and 3 hours from Spain.
Experience in genetics or apoptosis is preferred. French or foreign candidates are eligible.
