Insect Genomics Position at Baylor Genome Sequencing Center

Hi,
I'm hiring a person to help with the many amazing insect genome projects we have at the Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center. It is at the postdoc or possibly staff position for the right person so you will need a PhD in an insect system. In the past we have been involved in the melanogaster genome, D. pseudoobscura, the Honey bee and the red flour beetle Tribolium. Current projects include a large number of arthropods (bumble bee, dwarf bee, centipede, Hessian fly, Cotton Boll worm, Butterfly, Nasonia species complex, Pea Aphid) as well as the Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel - a project to fully characterize the genotype, and extensively phenotype 192 inbred melanogsater lines to link genotype and phenotype. I'm looking for someone who likes insect genomics, and can take full advantage of all the opportunities we have. The ability to write a perl script or similar is desirable given the vast amounts of data..

Postdoctoral Associate Position in Insect Genomics
The Human Genome Sequencing Center at the Baylor College of Medicine is searching for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher with an interest in insect genomics to join our group.

The focus of the position will be on utilizing a combination of bioinformatics and experimental approaches to study insect genome biology. Opportunities for this position range from de-novo genome analysis in a number of different insect species to population sequencing in Drosophila.

The sequencing technologies have evolved to produce rapid low cost sequencing of many insect genomes allowing massive and rapid biological investigation into non-model insect systems.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in insect molecular biology and or genomics. Some bioinformatics or computational biology experience is desired. Statistical genetics/population genetics training is also a plus, however not required. In-depth understanding/experience in molecular experimental approaches is advantageous, also not required. We encourage both independent thinking and close interactions with other members in a large teamwork setting.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
• Ph.D. in an insect system addressing molecular biology, genomics or population genetics.
• An enthusiasm for insect genomics.
• Work experience with Unix, and a scripting language such as perl, ruby or python.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
