The identification and characterisation of genomic regulatory elements that control gene expression is one of the key challenges in genome biology today. In this project you will use Drosophila melanogaster as a model system to gain further insight into the genomic regulatory code. You will use fly genetics, combined with high-throughput technologies such as RNA-Seq and ChIP-Seq to measure gene expression and transcription factor binding on a genomic scale. You will furthermore apply these methods to other Drosophila species and study the evolution of gene expression and cis-regulatory control. Computational analyses of multiple genomic data sets are an important aspect of this project, for which you will work in a team with one or more bioinformaticians of the lab. Depending on your interest and expertise, you can also combine wet-lab experiments and bioinformatics during this PhD project, although the main focus is on fly genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry.

The Center for Human Genetics and the Laboratory of Computational Biology (lab of Dr. Stein Aerts) in Leuven, Belgium, are seeking a highly motivated "next-generation biologist" that wants to be submerged into "integrative genomics", using high-throughput technologies, genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics. The successful candidate should have a PhD in the Life Sciences; should have a proven track record in Drosophila research; and should have a substantial interest in genome-scale integrative approaches. Experience with cis-regulation, next-generation sequencing or bioinformatics is not required, but is considered as a plus.
