Detailed Description

eyg1/Df(3L)eygC1 mutants have a small eye disc and show a complete loss of the retina.

eyg1/eygM3-12 flies have no eyes, whereas eyg1 homozygotes have small eyes.

eyg1 homozygotes, eyg1/In(3L)gvU and eyg1/eygM3-12 animals exhibit a small eye phenotype. Increased apoptosis can be seen anterior to the morphogenetic furrow in the developing eye-disc in homozygous mutant larvae.

The eye disc does not reach its normal size and shape in mutant flies and no photoreceptors differentiate. Photoreceptor development proceeds normally in most homozygous clones in the eye disc. eyg1/Df(3L)iro-2 hemizygous eye discs completely lack photoreceptors.

Homozygotes show reduced larval and pupal survival.

Eyes and head much smaller than normal. Considerable pupal mortality, probably from inability to push open pupa cases. Adults normal in viability and productivity. Character subject to genetic modifiers and possibly environmental influences. Expression varies from complete absence of facets to formation of about 100 facets. RK2.

HE31/+ partially restores eye development in eyg1/eygM3-12 flies, as does NICN.Scer\UAS; Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 or Su(H)Scer\UAS.cNa; Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1. upd1Scer\UAS.cZa; Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 completely restores eye development in eyg1/eygM3-12 flies. Df(1)os1; eyg1 double homozygotes lack eyes.

The addition of eyScer\UAS.cHa driven by Scer\GAL4ey.PH can partially rescue the eygM3-12/eyg1 mutant eye phenotype.

Photoreceptor development in eyg1/Df(3L)iro-2 discs is not rescued by tkvQ253D.Scer\UAS.cNb, dppScer\UAS.cFa or hhScer\UAS.cAa expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.PH. Photoreceptor development in eyg1/Df(3L)iro-2 discs is rescued by sggS9A.Scer\UAS, panΔN.Scer\UAS or Ras85DV12.Scer\UAS expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.PH.
