Less than 30% of smt304493 germ-line clone (GLC) embryos hatch and all hatched larvae die during the first larval instar. Greater than 90% of the unhatched embryos die prior to cuticle formation. The embryos that deposit cuticle exhibit a wide range of both anteroposterior and dorsoventral patterning defects. These defects are not rescued by zygotic smt3 expression as embryos produced by GLC females mated with wild type males show a comparable spectrum of phenotypes as those embryos produced by GLC females mated with heterozygous males.

Approximately 10% of smt304493 GLC eggs exhibit partially to fully fused dorsal appendages.

Over 50% of smt304493 GLC embryos exhibit a broad spectrum of nuclear cycle defects, including irregular size and distribution of nuclei, asynchronous nuclear division, abnormal interphase chromosome structure, overly condensed chromosomes, loss of sister chromatid cohesion during metaphase, polyploidy, chromosome clustering, fragmentation, and chromosome bridges. smt304493 GLC embryos often contain a reduced number of nuclei in relation to the centrosome pairs, and show defects in mitotic spindle organization and attachment to centrosomes and chromosomes.

Average Citrate Synthase activity is increased by 6% in heterozygous males

0.76% of smt304493/smt3k01211 animals survive as adult escapers. These females produce few late-stage egg chambers and these rare eggs have poorly developed dorsal appendages.

smt304493/+ enhances both the penetrance and expressivity of the held-out wing phenotype of tna1/+ flies. A maternal effect is observed in the enhancement of the tna1/+ held out phenotype by smt304493/+.

smt304493/+ augments the penetrance and the expressivity of the weak held-out wing phenotype of osa1/+.

A smt304493/+ background suppresses the visual system degeneration seen in Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, Ppt1Scer\UAS.cKa flies.

smt304493/Df(2L)32FP-5 double heterozygotes have ectopic wing vein L3 material in the L2-L3 intervein region in 86% of cases. The wing size is reduced in size by 10% compared to wild type.

The transheterozygote lwr05486/smt304493 suppresses the mod(mdg4)ul suppression of the ct6 jagged wing phenotype, leading to a more jagged and discontinuous wing phenotype. The phenotype is also particularly pronounced in females, although it is detectable in both sexes.

The transheterozygote lwr05486/smt304493 suppresses the mod(mdg4)ul suppression of the y2 cuticle phenotype, leading to a lighter coloration of the abdomen (due to a reduction in y expression). These phenotypic changes occur in approximately 30% of the mutant flies, with the remaining 70% displaying a continuum of less-pronounced effect. The phenotype is also particularly pronounced in females, although it is detectable in both sexes.

Enhancer of the Ras85Dix12a eggshell phenotype; 57% of eggs have fused and forked dorsal appendages.

Embryos derived from smt3k01211 and smt304493 germ-line clones (GLC) show an overlapping spectra of defects, with the average severity of defects being greater in smt3k01211 GLC embryos than smt304493 GLC embryos.
