Homozygous viable. Homozygous germline clones display maternal effect phenotype. Embryos derived from heterozygous mothers exhibit a brownish eye colour and the larval Malpighian tubules can be short, bloated and irregularly formed.

Xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) and aldehyde oxidase activity are undetectable in extracts of flies. Dithionite/sulfide treatment activates XDH levels to 95% of treated wild-type extracts.
