Insert stated as cause: middle repetitive DNA (inserted between coordinates -8.4 and -10.9, zero coordinate is defined as the centre of the 2.2kb EcoRI fragment that encompasses the N76b8 inversion breakpoint).
Insertion of a copia-like element at coordinate -11kb (coordinates according to FBrf0045027 and FBrf0039003).
Insertion transposable element opus into the second intron.

      Reference
Eyes of all males moderately rough owing to irregularity in size, shape and arrangement of facets. Not dosage compensated; eyes of females less rough than those of males with about 10% overlap of wild type. Eye roughness of the females varies from nearly normal at 18oC to marked at 29oC; pupal stage temperature-sensitive (Shellenbarger and Mohler, 1975). Eye abnormality caused by overgrowth of secondary pigment cells, which compresses cones and causes overlying corneal facets to bulge (Waddington and Pilkington, 1942). Wings have apical nicks in 0.25% of males and 0-5% of females. N/Nfa-1 has rough eyes of Nfa-1 as well as a Notch phenotype weak allele temperature sensitive nicked wings not dosage compensated

Nfa-1/Df(1)N-8 flies show disarrangement of the ommatidia, while it is comparatively rare that the posterior wing margin shows any notching. Nnd-0/Nfa-1 is phenotypically normal, except in very rare cases (0.26%) where slight notches in the wing are seen.
      Homozygotes have rough eyes.
Expression of the mutant phenotype is mild and variable.
At 29oC, the eyes are rough and splotchy in homozygous females and there is a low penetrance of apical nicks in the wing. At 25oC eye roughness is weaker, and at 18oC the eyes are almost normal.
      Homozygotes exhibit rough eyes.
Retina defects are associated with optic lobe defects in 81.8% of homozygous Nfa-1 retina clones generated by somatic recombination. The arrangement of ommatidia is abnormal in homozygous clones in the retina. A disruption of the fenestrated zone and laminar cortex, and a few small vacuoles in the lamina neuropil can be seen in the underlying optic lobe if it is defective.
      Slightly rough eyes.
N47i/Nfa-1 flies show no phenotypic effect. N51d in combination with Nfa-1 shows a characteristic phenotype.
