Detailed Description

Mutants have a have a mild rough eye phenotype.

rl9/rl10a heterozygotes die in the pupal stage. In contrast to wild type, there is very little increase in the mitotic index in either rl9/rl10a or rl10/rl10a mutants after colchicine treatment for 3 hrs, and over-condensation of the chromosomes is not seen.

rl9/rl2 flies lack the R7 photoreceptor cell and some outer photoreceptors. This phenotype is dominantly suppressed by aoppok-1.

Hemizygous larvae completely lack imaginal discs and die. Individuals die as pupae when heterozygous with rl1 or rl6.

L3 larval lethal as hemizygote no imaginal discs pupal lethal when heterozygous with rl1 or rl6 (Hilliker, 1976).

Additional Comments
Genetic Interactions
Statement
Reference

Embryos derived from homozygous fs(1)M31901 females fail to develop structures posterior to the seventh abdominal segment as well as anterior-most structures, including the head skeleton. The posterior defect is significantly suppressed if the female is also carrying one copy of Dsor1Su1; an eighth abdominal segment is formed. This suppression is significantly reduced if the females are also carrying one copy of rl9.

Phenotypes of rl mutants fall into an allelic series: Df(2R)rl10a/rl1 >= rl9/rl1 > rlla8/rl1 > rl10/rl1 > rl1/rl1.
