The average number of crystal cells per embryo is reduced (to 7.9) in homozygous stage 13-14 embryos compared to wild type (36 +/- 2.2 cells on average). The number of plasmatocytes is also significantly reduced compared to wild-type embryos. Mutant stage 14 embryos show cell cycle defects in the head region.

Transheterozygotes with stg^S096705b or stg^S114302b produce adult escapers that lack scutellars and many other bristles, have rough eyes and occasionally lack a haltere or have notched wings.
