Detailed Description
| |||
Statement Reference Homozygotes lack halteres and wings are almost always small and stumpy and do not extend beyond the scutellum. In vg1 wing discs, much of the wing pouch anlagen fails to develop. Of the indirect flight muscles in vg1 mutants, the dorsal medial muscles are severely reduced and the dorso-ventral muscles (lateral oblique dorsal muscles and tergosternal muscles) are minimal or completely missing. Heterozygotes have normal wing tissue. Significant cell death is seen in the third larval instar wing disc (in contrast to wild type). The formation of ectopic wing-like outgrowths caused by expression of vgScer\UAS.cZa under the control of Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1 is more strongly reduced in a vg1 homozygous background than in a vg1 heterozygous background. Wing length increases with increasing temperature. Flies have reduced wings and halteres. No effect on the faf eye phenotype. Wing imaginal discs are smaller than wild type due to cell death. Most of the wing is missing, only some of the most proximal structures remain. Homozygotes display high sensitivity to fluorodeoxyuridine (FUdR), an inhibitor of thymidylate synthetase and high resistance to aminopterin. No interaction with mw2. Homozygotes have no wings. Homozygotes display an extreme vg phenotype when in the P-cytotype or M-cytotype. Homozygotes have vestigial wings.

Additional Comments

Genetic Interactions
| |||
Statement Reference sdETX4, vg1/vg79d5 wings are very small and deformed. The addition of sd::vgScer\UAS.sdTEA (driven by Scer\GAL4vg.PM) significantly rescues the wing defects. Suppresses the expansion of the wing pouch caused by expression of spis.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1. Heterozygotes show a cut wing phenotype in combination with mutants in the 'Nipped' genes. Has no effect on the eye phenotype of Nspl-1. Cell death is also abundant in l(2)gd11 vg1 and ft8 vg1 wing imaginal discs. Pharate adult wings of l(2)gd11 vg1, l(2)gd13 vg1 and ft8 vg1 double mutants are partially restored compared to the single homozygotes. At a high growth temperature, 29oC, wings of homozygotes and l(2)gd11 vg1 double mutants are more normal due to improved cell viability.
Xenogenetic Interactions
| |||
Statement Reference Expression of BacA\p35[Scer\UAS.cHa] under the control of Scer\GAL4[vg.PU] partially suppresses the vg[1] wing phenotype.
