Permissive temperature is 18oC, restrictive temperature is 27oC. Early stages of spermatogenesis up through mature primary spermatocytes are present and normal. Postmeiotic stages are completely absent. Mutant testes have an abundance of mature primary spermatocytes with large, round nuclei and prominent nucleoli. Triple mutant aly1, can1, sa1 homozygotes are female fertile and male sterile, with similar effects on testis squashes as sa1 and can1. Spermatocytes arrest in the G2/M transition of meiosis I with partial chromosome condensation. At 18oC spermatocytes complete meiosis and undergo abnormal spermatid differentiation.

premeiotic defect No meiotic divisions or postmeiotic stages; spermatocytes accumulate.
