Detailed Description

Syx5AR113 heterozygotes show increased dietary copper tolerance compared with wild-type. Heterozygous Syx5AR113 larvae accumulate less copper than wild-type on both basal and copper-supplemented diets. They accumulate more zinc than wild-type on zinc-supplemented diet, but tolerance to excess zinc is unaffected.

Syx5EP2313/Syx5AR113 mutant males (with no Scer\GAL4 driver) have no motile sperm and appear to be defective in spermatid elongation. Mutant testes contain predominantly large, oval cysts and a few elongated bundles. Mutant testes also have abnormally large mitochondrial derivatives that are associated with multiple nuclei, indicative of a failure in cytokinesis. Mutant testes also exhibit an accumulation of unusual ovoid spermatid cysts.

One copy of Syx5AR113 partially rescues the lamina cartridge neuron differentiation defects seen in the eye discs of ruPLLb mutant third instar larvae. Neuronal markers are detected in a small population of cells at the posterior of the lamina.
