Detailed Description

sbbplt/sbbk00702 mutants exhibit a wing vein phenotype wherein wing vein L5 fails to reach the wing margin, and males of these mutants also fail to copulate.

Third instar larvae homozygous for sbbk00702 or transheterozygous for sbbk00702/sbbEP328 or sbbk00702/sbbEP2461 display a significant increase in turning rate during crawling, as compared to controls.

In contrast to the wild-type, in mutant larvae, the lamina plexus is discontinuous. Thick bundles of axons are frequently observed between the lamina and the medulla, in striking contrast to the thin bundles in wild-type. In the most severe cases, the lamina plexus is largely missing and the medulla neuropil is hyperinnervated. In addition, disruptions in the normally smooth topographic map in then medulla are observed. However R-cell projections do not extend through the medulla into deeper layers of the optic lobe, suggesting that R8 neurons terminate, as in wild-type, within the medulla neuropil.

R1-R6 photoreceptor axons overshoot their targets in sbb1/sbbk00702 or sbb2/sbbk00702 transheterozygous larvae.

Homozygous larvae show significantly more turning behaviour on non-nutritive agar than wild-type larvae ("scribbler" behaviour).

Phenotypic analysis suggests an allelic series: sbb4 >= sbbk06903b > sbb5 = sbbk00702 > sbb04440.
