Adults exhibit dose-dependent roughening of the eye surface due to loss of one or more outer photoreceptors from many of the ommatidia because of failure to initiate neuronal differentiation. Receptor cells 2 and 5 lose aspects of their photoreceptor subtype identity while remaining neuronal.
