Melanotic tumour formation varies among individuals and melanotic tumours can result from haematopoietic abnormalities and from the melanisation of gastric caecae and gut tissue. In the haematopoietic system an overproliferation of phagocytic plasmatocytes is observed.

Phenotype is partially suppressed by a reduction of wild type Stat92E activity, Stat92E06346. Female mortality and male and female tumour formation are reduced, male lethality is not rescued. Stat92E06346 and Stat92EHJ can suppress the premature differentiation and aggregation but not the overproliferation of larval haemocytes.
