Flies that express cswG547E.hs.2sev in the developing eye have fewer outer photoreceptors per ommatidium (on average 3.3) than wild-type flies (6 per ommatidium).

Flies expressing cswG547E.hs.2sev in a wild-type background show disruption of the normal ommatidial array due to loss of photoreceptor cells, including R3, R4 and R7. This phenotype is suppressed if the flies are also co-expressing cswhs.2sev, cswΔin.hs.2sev, cswΔtail.hs.2sev, csw::Src64Bhs.2sev or csw::Src64BC583S.hs.2sev, is not suppressed if the flies are also co-expressing cswR137K.hs.2sev or cswSH2SH2.hs.2sev and is only slightly suppressed if the flies are also co-expressing cswR32K.hs.2sev or cswCS.hs.2sev.

Flies show a rough eye phenotype that never occurs in cswhs.2sev flies. All ommatidia are malformed and contain fewer than the normal eight photoreceptors. Ommatidia generally lack R3, R4 and R7 photoreceptors. This phenotype is suppressed by cswhs.2sev and enhanced by heterozygosity for loss of function csw mutations. Expression of cswG547E.hs.2sev blocks neural development of photoreceptor precursor cells.

However, the wild-type number is 6.
