All flies carry the w1118 mutation, all observed pigmentation is due to expression of the w transgene. P{hsFLP} P{RS3} heat induced expression during third instar larvae causes loss of w expression in the posterior of the eye, a vertical stripe arises from the region of reduced heat shock response in front of the morphogenetic furrow and mosaicism in the very anterior of the eye. P{70FLP} P{RS5} heat induced expression 6 hours after puparium formation causes rare and small spots of visible pigment (small fraction of cells in which the w gene escapes destruction). Control flies without heat shock exhibit slight mosaicism due to constitutive activity of P{70FLP} early in development. Heat induced expression of P{hsFLP} P{FRT(iwoff)} during adult stages generates P{FRT(iwon)} and causes pigmented spots to appear throughout the eyes several days later.
Phenotype is as for w+mW.hs.
Transformants have orange eyes.

In P{RS3} a second direct Scer\FRT site is located 5' to the w sequences, in P{RS5} a second direct Scer\FRT site is located 3' to the w sequences and in P{FRT(iwon)} a second divergent Scer\FRT site is located 3' to the w sequences. The w gene is turned on in the P{RS3} and P{RS5} construct and Scer\FLP1-mediated expression splits the gene into a non-functional transgene and a non-functional portion of extrachromosomal w gene. The w gene in P{FRT(iwon)} can be reversibly turned on and off by Scer\FLP1-mediated inversion of the 3' end.
