Detailed Description
Statement
Reference
pydJ14/pydJ14, pydJ14/Df(3R)pydC2 and pydJ14/pydC5 flies have extra macrochaetae on the head and notum compared to wild-type. Heterozygotes have an average of 0.29 +/- 0.07 extra macrochaetae per fly. Late third instar larval discs contain extra sensory organ precursors. Homozygotes have slightly rough eyes, due to the presence of duplicated and mispositioned bristles and occasional enlarged and irregularly shaped ommatidia. Ommatidia occasionally contain too few or extra cone cells and/or extra primary pigment cells. A small fraction of hemizygous embryos fail to hatch. These embryos show some defects in head involution and head skeleton formation, and denticle belts are sparse and disorganised.

Genetic Interactions
Statement
Reference
The pydJ14 extra bristle and rough eye phenotypes are strongly enhanced by Dl6B at 29oC. The bristle loss phenotype of NAx-E2/+ flies is partially suppressed by pydJ14. One copy of emc20 strongly enhances the pydJ14 phenotype, resulting in extra sensory organs in positions characteristic of pyd mutants rather than emc mutants. emc20 pydJ14 double homozygotes die as embryos or early larvae. The embryos produced usually have severe defects in head involution and lack the cephalo-pharyngeal skeleton. Some embryos also have holes in the dorsal cuticle of the head. The denticle belts are sparse and disorganised.
