piwi06843 homozygous and piwi2/piwi06843 transheterozygous females exhibit rudimentary ovaries.

piwi06843/Df(2L)BSC145 mutant ovaries frequently contain agametic germaria and lack egg chambers. Only one to two egg chambers is produced per ovariole and occasional compound egg chambers (multiple cysts in one follicular epithelium) is seen.

Mutant ovaries show normal morphology at the third larval instar. Germ-line stem cells are normal in number and correctly positioned in third instar ovaries. Terminal filament formation is normal. Adult ovaries contain only 2 egg chambers connected to a germarium lacking germ line cells. Embryos derived from germ-line clones have various defects, including mitotic defects during cleavage stage or later severe deformation of head region.

A CycJnull/Df(3L)Exel6095 mutant background (expressing armi+t6.3 to restore armi[+] function) enhances the oogenesis defects seen in piwi06843/Df(2L)BSC145 mutant females. The frequency of compound egg chambers (multiple cysts in one follicular epithelium) is comparable to that seen in Df(3L)armi-J. Addition of CycJ+t4 decreases the frequency of compound egg chambers to the levels seen in the piwi mutant alone.

The segregation distortion seen in males carrying either the SD-5star or SD-LosArenos Dp(2;2)RanGAPSD chromosome variant (in a sensitive Rsp background) is enhanced (the k[[c]] value, or proportion of Dp(2;2)RanGAPSD-bearing progeny as the fraction of total progeny (corrected for viability), is significantly increased) if the males are also carrying a single copy of piwi06843.

The survival of roX1ex33A Df(1)roX2Δ adult males is not significantly altered if they are also heterozygous for piwi06843.

The yellowish eye colour caused by expression of one copy of wdsRNA.GMR in a wild-type background is not altered if the flies are also homozygous for piwi06843.
