UASt regulatory sequences drive expression of a cDNA fragment which encodes the protein produced in E(spl)m8-HLH1 mutants (the protein lacks the C-terminal 56 amino acid residues of wild-type E(spl)m8-HLH and has nine new amino acids in their place). The encoded protein acts as a dominant negative (as assayed by effects on bristle development).

Expression of E(spl)m8-HLH1.Scer\UAS with Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 has no effect on the eye or interommatidial bristles, but results in significantly more flies with ectopic scutellar macrochaetes than controls.

Expression of E(spl)m8-HLH1.Scer\UAS with Scer\GAL4455.2 results in ectopic scutellar macrochaetes.

Expression of E(spl)1.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4h-H10 leads to eyes of wild-type appearance.

When E(spl)Scer\UAS.cKa is driven by Scer\GAL4455.2, the number of macrochaetae seen on the scutellum is increased from 4 to about 5.5. When E(spl)1.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4sca-537.4 no reduction in the eye is seen. When E(spl)1.Scer\UAS is driven by Scer\GAL4h-1J3, Scer\GAL4GMR.PF or Scer\GAL4hs.2sev no eye phenotype is seen.

When E(spl)1.Scer\UAS is expressed in the eye under the control of Scer\GAL4unspecified, a weak eye phenotype is seen.

Scer\GAL4sca-537.4-mediated expression enhances development of bristles on the notum and causes development of split bristles on the abdomen and head.

Expression of E(spl)1.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4h-H10 in a Nspl-1/Y background results in reduced eyes that are similar in appearance to those seen in Nspl-1/Y single mutants.
