When driven by Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, rprScer\UAS.cCa flies display little or no adult eye tissue. When somatic clones are induced in the follicle cells (driven by Scer\GAL4Act5C.PP), occasional cells display nuclear condensation 12-18hrs post induction. By 24-30 hours the frequency of cell death is much higher. Older, larger clones display many aberrant nuclei and degenerating follicle cells can be observed at all oogenic stages leading to discontinuities in the follicle layer. This can be observed in mosaic egg chambers from about stage 6, but not in earlier previtellogenic chambers. 24-30 hours post induction, a phenotype is also seen in nurse cells - in every ovary a variable number of egg chambers at stages 7-8 or later displayed degenerating nurse cells. In these cells associated deformities in ring canal morphology can be seen. The nurse cell cytoskeleton also becomes disorganised These phenotypes are always associated with degenerating follicle cells, and not seen in younger clones (before stage 7), even in the presence of large follicle cell clones. When somatic clones are induced in the follicle cells (driven by Scer\GAL4Act5C.PP), examination by TUNEL analysis suggest that nuclei within the clones have a DNA fragmentation phenotype and are being induced to apoptosis. DNA fragmentation is also seen in nurse cells after stage 7, occurring before nuclear condensation.

The addition of BacA\p35Scer\UAS.cCa prevents the cell death seen in the eyes of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, rprScer\UAS.cCa flies from occurring. The addition of BacA\p35Scer\UAS.cCa prevents the follicle layer and nurse cell phenotypes of clones expressing rprScer\UAS.cCa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C.PP.
