Expression of p53Scer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4ninaE.PT induces outer photoreceptor cell death, but not inner photoreceptor cell death (i.e. is cell-autonomous).

36% of pupariated animals expressing p53Scer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C.PI eclose.

When p53Scer\UAS.cJa is ectopically expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, a rough eye phenotype can be seen. In the developing retina increased apoptosis is seen.

Loss of one genomic copy of ninaA, in a ninaAE110V/+, ninaA19/+, ninaAG98D/+ or ninaA1/+ heterozygous background (but not in a ninaAR120K/+ background), protects the outer photoreceptor cells from Scer\GAL4ninaE.PT;p53Scer\UAS.cJa-induced apoptosis.

Two-thirds of animals expressing p53Scer\UAS.cJa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C.PI in a DLPU26/DLPU26 background die in early pupal stage and only 9% of them eclose.
