Expression of TotA[Scer\UAS.cEa] under the control of Scer\GAL4[elav-C155] induces MeHg tolerance. However, it does not affect the rate of eclosion in a MeHg environment. A significant fraction of these larvae progress to a late stage of pupal development as determined by formation of dark pupae. Extracting these pupae from their cases reveals that normal metamorphosis has occurred (as determined by the presence of complete adult eyes, wings, and bristle structures. In contrast, controls show a marked deficit in development, with 'white' undeveloped pupae. Expression of TotA[Scer\UAS.cEa] in the fat body of the larvae, under the control of Scer\GAL4[c754], confers tolerance to MeHg, as observed through the greater number of dark pupae that result at the 10-20υM Melts Treatments.
When TotAScer\UAS.cEa is driven by Scer\GAL4c729 flies become more resistant to heat stress. Flies survive significantly longer at 37oC and are significantly more active during times of heat stress.
Flies expressing TotAScer\UAS.cEa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.PB survive significantly longer than control siblings in the presence of paraquat, however, the increased resistance may be caused by differences in genetic background rather than overexpression of TotA.
