Homozygous embryos develop normally during early embryogenesis, with DNA staining suggesting that mitoses are normal throughout the first 16 epidermal cell divisions. Late mitoses and cell divisions in embryonic neural precursors also appear to be unaffected. Despite this, 95% of homozygous embryos die before hatching. Rare larval escapers have almost no motor activity and fail to grow.
