Expression of CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB] using heat shock during the first or second larval instar results in lethality, while heat shock during the third larval instar results in eclosion of small adults. Expression of CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB] using heat shock in males does not affect the number of adult progeny from these flies. These males show a high frequency of mating behaviour and also show male-male courtship behaviour. Expression of CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB] using heat shock in newly eclosed female flies results in a reduced number of adult progeny flies even when the females are mated with normal males. Newly eclosed females expressing CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB] lay significantly fewer eggs than control females (this effect is seen both when they are mated to wild-type males and when they are mated to males expressing CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB]). These females have significantly fewer eggs in their ovaries 4 days after eclosion compared to control females (egg production in these females can be recovered by application of methoprene). Fecundity is not affected if females carrying CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB] are heat shocked 7 days after eclosion. CG3776[EP835] females (in the absence of a Scer\GAL4 driver) lay significantly more eggs than control females (this effect is seen both when they are mated to wild-type males and when they are mated to CG3776[EP835] males). CG3776[EP835] males (in the absence of a Scer\GAL4 driver) show a 38.8% reduction in lifespan compared to controls, while males expressing CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB] show a 42.6% reduction in lifespan compared to controls. CG3776[EP835] females (in the absence of a Scer\GAL4 driver) show a 31.6% reduction in lifespan compared to controls, while females expressing CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB] show a 35% reduction in lifespan compared to controls. Flies expressing CG3776[EP835] under the control of Scer\GAL4[hs.PB] show increased locomotor activity compared to controls.
