Sk2KG05894/Df(3L)BSC671 larvae have significantly increased satellite bouton number at the neuromuscular junction of muscle 4, compared to controls, with no effect on bouton size or number.

Sk2KG05894 homozygous mutant adults present significantly increased survival to starvation, increased body weight, increased adiposity in abdominal sections, and increased sizes of fat body cells and lipid droplets, as compared to controls.

Sk2KG05894 homozygous mutant adults present increased feeding behavior, as assessed by increased starvation-induced appetite, increased postprandial meal volume, increased average meal frequency and volume, and increased daily food intake, as compared to controls.

Sk2KG05894 flies appear morphologically normal at room temperature.

Mutant animals show a marked increase in sphingolipid content at all stages of the life cycle compared to wild-type animals. Homozygotes show no reduction in viability at any stage of the life cycle and adult longevity is normal. Adults show impaired flight ability (20% reduction in flight performance), although the morphology and patterning of the indirect flight muscles appears normal. Homozygous females produce only 43% of the number of eggs that wild-type females produce. The ovaries do not show morphological defects and no abnormal masses other than an increase in fatty tissue that normally surrounds the gonads. The ovaries are consistently enlarged however, due to an increase in the number of mature eggs.

Sk2KG05894, ifc4 double homozygous adults present a more severe increase in survival in response to starvation as compared to either Sk2KG05894 or ifc4 homozygous mutants.

The increased body weight, increased adiposity in abdominal sections, and increased sizes of fat body cells and lipid droplets observed in either ifc4 or Sk2KG05894 homozygous mutant adults are not exacerbated in ifc4, Sk2KG05894 double homozygous adults.

The increased starvation-induced appetite, but not the increased postprandial meal volume, the increased average meal frequency and volume, or the increased daily food intake, observed in Sk2KG05894 homozygous mutant adults is exacerbated by ifc4 homozygosity.

One copy of Sk2KG05894 fails to suppress the maternal effect lethality caused by expression of wntDScer\UAS.P\T.cEa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act.PU.

Precise excision of the P{SUPor-P} element fully rescues the impaired flight ability of Sk2KG05894 flies.
