rgγ5 mutants display abnormal type I bouton morphology: changes in shape, fusion of boutons. Size of type I boutons remains unchanged but their number is significantly decreased.

rgγ5 mutants show decreased frequency of peristaltic contractions, decreased speed of movement and are more likely to be in a curled position.

rgγ5 mutants show increased habituation of the giant fiber circuit in adults.

Mutant flies show a significant reduction in aversive and appetitive memory compared to controls when assayed immediately after olfactory conditioning.

43% of mushroom body hemispheres have morphological defects in hemizygous males.

Moderate rough eye phenotype.

Expression of Mmus\NbeaScer\UAS.cVa under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PU completely rescues the loss of immediate aversive memory seen in rgγ5 flies but fails to rescue the loss of immediate appetitive memory seen in rgγ5 flies in an olfactory conditioning assay.

The mushroom body defects seen in hemizygous rgγ5 males are not rescued by expression of Mmus\NbeaScer\UAS.cVa under the control of either Scer\GAL4elav.PU, Scer\GAL4ey-OK107 or Scer\GAL4Mef2.247.

Expression of rgScer\UAS.cVa under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PU completely rescues the loss of immediate aversive and appetitive memory seen in rgγ5 flies in an olfactory conditioning assay. If expression of rgScer\UAS.cVa is restricted to the adult stage 36 hours before the olfactory conditioning assay (using the temperature-sensitive Scer\GAL80ts.αTub84B allele), the rescue of aversive memory is abolished.

Expression of rgScer\UAS.cVa under the control of either Scer\GAL4Mef2.247 or Scer\GAL4ey-OK107 rescues the loss of immediate aversive and appetitive memory seen in rgγ5 flies in an olfactory conditioning assay.
