Imprecise excision of the qkr58E-3EP2493 element in qkr58E-2 causes a 1.4kb deletion, spanning exons 1-5 of the qkr58E-3 gene.
Homozygous mutants are viable and show no obvious morphological phenotype. Only 46% of eggs laid from homozygous females hatch. The unhatched eggs fall into three major phenotypic classes. 17.7% are short and fat in appearance, but have the proper amount of dorsal appendage material. 7% are normal in size but have little or no dorsal appendage material. The remainder have a normal appearance. Mutant animals have an increased susceptibility to E.coli infection. 30 and 40% of homozygous and heterozygous mutants survive respectively. Occassionally mutant adults exhibit cell overgrowth in the eye.
