CHORD[c02881]/+ flies are viable and morphologically normal. CHORD[c02881]/CHORD[c02881] flies die as third instar larvae. Mutant larvae are devoid of imaginal discs, and display strongly reduced testes and salivary glands. Brain preparations from CHORD[c02881] mutant larvae show that in 95% of dividing cells the chromosomes are elongated and irregularly condensed. Mutant cells spend more time in mitosis than wild-type control cells. The majority of cells remain arrested in a prophase-metaphase state. Of those that do escape into anaphase, strong defects in chromosome segregation are observed. 30% of mutant neuroblasts are polyploid, compared to 0.2% in control cells. In addition, an increase in the frequency of apoptotic cells is observed in mutant tissue (7.7%) compared to control brain tissue (0.5%). Supernumerary centrosomes are observed in CHORD[c02881] mutant brain cells.

Expression of Hsap\CHORDC1[Scer\UAS.cFa] under the control of Scer\GAL4[Act5C.PI] in CHORD[c02881] mutant flies rescues the imaginal disc and testis phenotype, and these tissues appear mostly normal. Most mitotic divisions observed in brain tissue are completely normal None of the observed mitotic figures were polyploid, and 98% of dividing cells display two centrosomes. These flies still die during metamorphosis.

Expression of CHORD[Scer\UAS.cFa] under the control of Scer\GAL4[Act5C.PI] in CHORD[c02881] mutant animals fails to rescue lethality.
