Very few, if any, photoreceptor cells are present in newly eclosed adults, although the photoreceptor cells appear to be recruited and specified correctly within the eye imaginal disc in larvae. Cone cell formation during pupal development appears to be abnormal in these animals; the number of cone cells per ommatidium is increased to 5 or 6 cells (compared to 4 in wild type). The severe rough eye phenotype caused by expression of nejScer\UAS.T:SV5\V5 under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF is suppressed if the flies also carry nej3/+.
Flies expressing nejScer\UAS.T:SV5\V5 under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF have smooth eyes which completely lack ommatidia and mechanosensory bristles. Photoreceptors are not detected in these animals.

Co-expression of nejScer\UAS.T:SV5\V5 partially rescues the small eye and lens fusion phenotype seen in adult flies expressing Hsap\APPAβ42.Scer\UAS.cUa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU. Co-expression of nejScer\UAS.T:SV5\V5 partially suppresses the increased cell death and aberrant axonal targeting observed in third instar eye discs of flies expressing Hsap\APPAβ42.Scer\UAS.cUa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU.
