fwd3/fwdZ0453 spermatids are multinucleated.

Analysis of mutant spermatocytes from fwdZ0453/Df(3L)7C flies reveals that they exhibit an equatorial localisation of Golgi vesicles in 44% of the telophases.

A large proportion of fwdZ0453 mutant spermatids have one large nebenkern with four nuclei of normal size, indicating a cytokinetic failure in both meiotic divisions, while a smaller proportion have two nuclei and a large nebenkern, indicating failure of only one of the meiotic divisions. Occasionally spermatids are seen (<1% of cases) with three nuclei, which may be due to failure of cytokinesis in the first meiotic division, followed by budding off of only one daughter cell in the second meiotic division. Further, some spermatids contain more than four nuclei, which may result from defects in the mitotic divisions preceding mitosis. Additionally, a small proportion of spermatids contain nuclei of irregular sizes. During early telophase of fwdZ0453/Df(3L)7C spermatocytes, there is an actin ring of normal appearance and and a normal central spindle. However, as telophase progresses the actin ring often fails to fully constrict and in late telophases where there is a high degree of constriction, there is a greater amount of F-actin at the ring. In a small proportion of late telophase figures, the central spindle is also defective.

Testes from bruZ0704/bruZ3358, fwdZ0453/Df(3L)7C males produce higher percentages of multi-nucleate early spermatids associated with enlarged mitochondrial derivatives than testes from siblings containing one mutant and one wild type copy of either bru or fwd.

The elongation of later-stage spermatids is defective in bruZ0704/bruZ3358, fwdZ0453/Df(3L)7C testes.

Mitotic cytokinesis appears normal in bruZ0704/bruZ3358, fwdZ0453/Df(3L)7C third instar larval brains.

Rab1193Bi/Rab11ETo11, fwd3/fwdZ0453 spermatids are multinucleated at a similar frequency to fwd3/fwdZ0453 spermatids.

vibEP513, fwd3/fwdZ0453 spermatids are multinucleated at a similar frequency to fwd3/fwdZ0453 spermatids.
