Flip out clones expressing zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PU have a reduced distance between the apical membranes of rhabdomeres R2 and R4 (width of the retinal lumen) compared to controls.

Expression of zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 from 0 hours after puparium formation (APF) (using the temperature sensitive Scer\GAL80ts.αTub84B allele to limit repress expression before this stage) results in bristle orientation defects and epidermal indentations in the notum. Later expression (from 14 hours APF) results in weak bristle orientation defects.

Compared with wild-type flies, those expressing zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4Cg.PA show a significantly shortened lifespan under starvation conditions.

Expression of a single copy of zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4en-e16E results in variable loss of tissue in the posterior compartment of the wing. Cells in the remaining posterior wing tissue show a multiple wing hair and split hair phenotype.

Expression of a single copy of zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4en-e16E in a zip1/+ background results in lethality.

Expression of two copies of zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4en-e16E results in lethality.

Microchaetae and macrochaetae on the thorax may also show a branched phenotype, or multiple chaetae extending from a single socket cell may also be seen.

Expression of zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4ap-md544 results in a complete loss of adhesion between the two epithelial sheets of the wing in nearly all eclosing flies. Only cells along the wing margin are adhered to each other, resulting in wings which appear balloon-like on eclosion and collapse soon afterwards. In addition, the dorsal surface of the wing is reduced in size compared to the ventral surface.

Expression of zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP under the control of Scer\GAL4arm.T:Hsim\VP16 results in the loss of para-segmental boundary straightness.

Expression of zipDN.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP, under the control of Scer\GAL4en-e16E, in a zip1/+ background causes stripe misalignments in 52% of embryos, while only 4% of zip1/+ embryos show this phenotype without transgene expression.
