The difference between the reported and annotated positions of the amino acid change in the mutant results from the use of a downstream translation start in the previous eys annotation and the publication. The annotation was updated in T5.55 to start at an in-frame ATG which is 11aa upstream.

eys1/eys1 mutant pupae display fusion of rhabdomeres and a loss of the inter-rhabdomeral lumen.

In eys1 mutants, all or nearly all rhabdomeres are fused to a single rhabdomere cluster and no inter-rhabdomeral space is formed.

eys1 mutant photoreceptor cells undergo light-dependent degeneration. The retinal degeneration can be prevented in the absence of dietary vitamin A.

One copy of eys1 does not lead to rhabdomere fusion.

eys1 mutant eyes exhibit no inter-rhabdomeral space and the rhabdomeres remain juxtaposed to each other.

Mutant files show severe defects in entrainment to temperature cycles in assays studying locomotor rhythms.

Mutant flies show an uncoordinated phenotype at 37[o]C, which is largely suppressed if the humidity is greater than 90%.

eys1 mutant adults have eyes with apparently normal microvilli. However, these eyes show a striking failure of the rhabdomeres to separate from each other, including a complete loss of inter-rhabdomeral space, irregular rhabdomere morphology and improper rhabdomeral contacts.

The eys1 ommatidial phenotype is partially suppressed by crb11A22. The number of rhabdomere clusters and individual rhabdomeres is increased, but no inter-rhabdomeral space is formed.

Flies trans-heterozygous for prom1 and eys1 show partial fusion of rhabdomeres. The phenotype is variable along the length of the retina.

The prom1/+, eys1/+ fusion phenotype is suppressed along the entire length of the rhabdomeres by heterozygous crb11A22.

One copy of both eys1 and prom1 results in a partial failure to form a continuous open inter-rhabdomeral space (retinal lumen), exhibited by the presence of juxtaposed rhabdomeres. This phenotype is significantly enhanced by one copy of either Df(1)ED6829 or Act5CG0245.

In prom1/prom1, eys1/+; chp2/+ triple mutant flies, the rescue of the prom1/prom1 phenotype is reduced compared to the prom1/prom1; chp2/+ flies, with most ommatidia in the triple mutants showing between 0 and 3 individual rhabdomeres and no ommatidia showing more than 3 individual rhabdomeres.

Expression of eysScer\UAS.cZa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.PB fully rescues the rhabdomere phenotype of eys1 flies when eysScer\UAS.cZa expression is induced at 36-64 hours after puparium formation. Induction at about 72 hours, using either Scer\GAL4hs.PB or Scer\GAL4ninaE.PD, leads only to a partial rescue.
