Mechanical and electrical responses to sound in the Johnston's organ are impaired in mutant flies.
Mutant larvae show defects in discrimination between 18[o]C and 24[o]C in a binary choice thermotaxis assay compared to controls. This defect is reversed if all trans-retinal is added to the food.
Electroretinograms from santa-maria1 flies fail to show prolonged depolarization afterpotential (PDA) in response to blue light. This phenotype is rescued when flies are fed with all-trans-retinal but not when they are fed with β-carotene.

Expression of santa-maria[Scer\UAS.cWa] under the control of Scer\GAL4[ph-p-NP0761] rescues the defects in mechanical and electrical responses of the Johnston's organ to sound which are seen in santa-maria[1] flies.
Expression of santa-mariahs.PW restores a prolonged depolarization afterpotential in response to blue light in electroretinogram recordings from santa-maria1 flies.
