Overexpression of gwl[L.Scer\UAS] in eggs/embryos under the control of Scer\GAL4[mat.αTub67C.T:Hsim\VP16] from tws[j11C8]/+ mothers is almost completely lethal. Most eggs/embryos are blocked in metaphase of meiosis I, even after 4 to 6 hours post-laying. Only a few eggs manage to complete meiosis and attempt to initiate embryonic development. However, these embryos usually abort in the first mitosis, displaying several aberrant structures with condensed chromatin at the center of small spindles. The few mitotic nuclei observed show a very high incidence of detached centrosomes.
Female germline expression of gwl[L.Scer\UAS] (under the control of Scer\GAL4[mat.αTub67C.T:Hsim\VP16]) in polo[11] heterozygous females allows partial egg hatch (around 4%), and these embryos also show loss of centrosomes from spindles in early syncytial divisions.

Comments
Expression of gwl[L.Scer\UAS] under the control of Scer\GAL4[Act5C] rescues the viability and somatic integrity of gwl[Sr3]/gwl[Sr6], gwl[Sr3]/gwl[Sr3], gwl[Sr3]/Df(3L)gwl[3b] and gwl[Sr3]/Df(3L)gwl[3b] flies to similar degrees. The fertility of gwl[Sr18]/Df(3L)gwl[3b] females is rescued completely by expression of gwl[L.Scer\UAS] in the maternal germline with Scer\GAL4[mat.αTub67C.T:Hsim\VP16].
