Flies expressing mars[Scer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG] under the control of Scer\GAL4[GMR.PF] have small, rough eyes. This phenotype is partially suppressed by coexpression of mars[Scer\UAS.WIZ]. The number of mitotic cells at the second mitotic wave in eye discs expressing mars[Scer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG] under the control of Scer\GAL4[GMR.PF] is increased compared to controls. The distribution of BrdU labeling is similar in the mutant and control eye discs. 68.8 +/- 9.5% of mitotic figures at the second mitotic wave are abnormal in eye discs expressing mars[Scer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG] under the control of Scer\GAL4[GMR.PF]. Circular or fragmented chromosomes, misalignment of chromosomes, aberrant anaphase with lagging chromosomes and incorrect separation of centriole pairs is seen. The fraction of mitotic cells in anaphase or telophase is reduced to 2.7 +/- 1.8% in eye discs expressing mars[Scer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG] under the control of Scer\GAL4[GMR.PF] (compared to 21.0 +/- 11.0% of mitotic cells being in anaphase or telophase in wild-type discs). Eye discs expressing mars[Scer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG] under the control of Scer\GAL4[GMR.PF] show a significant increase in the number of apoptotic cells posterior to the morphogenetic furrow compared to wild-type eye discs.

The increased cell death posterior to the morphogenetic furrow that is seen in eye discs expressing mars[Scer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG] under the control of Scer\GAL4[GMR.PF] is suppressed by co-expression of BacA\p35[Scer\UAS.cHa].
