Mical[15256] and Mical[15256]/Df(3R)swp2[MICAL] mutants exhibit a failure of dendrite severing in ddaC neurons by 18h APF. Mical[15256] ddaC neurons retain an average of 7.4 primary and secondary dendrites attached to the soma at 18h APF and 3 dendrites at 24h APF, indicating that the mutant neurons have a strong severing defect. The overall larval dendrite morphology of ddaC neurons in the wL3 larvae of Mical[15256] zygotic mutants is indistinguishable from that of wild-type ddaC neurons, as judged by the number of terminal dendrites. Mical[15256] ddaC MARCM clones show a severing defect in ddaC neurons.

Overexpression of Sox14[fl.Scer\UAS] under the control of either Scer\GAL4[ppk.1.9] or Scer\GAL4[221] in a homozygous Mical[15256] background has a very mild pruning effect on primary and secondary dendrites by 6 hours APF.
