Scer\GAL4Gr61a.4.9 drives expression in about 12 sugar-sensing chemosensory neurons in the prothoracic leg. A subset of the leg neurons project to the ventral nerve cord then ascend through the cervical connective to the posterior gnathal gangion.

Scer\GAL4Gr61a.4.9 drives expression in 1-2 gustatory receptor neurons associated with the taste pegs and 4 gustatory receptor neurons of the adult labral sense organ. All of the labellar neurons and many of the tarsal S cells send projections to the adult subesophageal zone.

Scer\GAL4Gr61a.4.9 is expressed in most of the long sugar-sensitive neuron of the taste sensilla of the labellum.

Scer\GAL4Gr61a.4.9 is expressed in the long sugar-sensitive receptor neurons of the gustatory sensilla of the labellum.

Inhibition (using Hsap\KCNJ2UAS.EGFP) of Scer\GAL4Gr61a.4.9 cells in adults significantly reduces preference for sucrose, compared to controls. When inhibition is restricted to a smaller set of cells (using Ecol\lexAVP16.Gr5a.cGa and Scer\GAL80IVS.WPRE.8xlexAop) there is still a significant reduction in preference for sucrose, compared to controls.

Ablation of Scer\GAL4Gr61a.4.9-expressing neurons does not affect sensitivity to the gustatory sex pheromone (S,Z,Z)-CH503: as in wild type, courtship defects are seen in these flies in response to (S,Z,Z)-CH503.

Inhibition (using Ork1Δ-C.UAS.EGFP) of Scer\GAL4Gr61a.4.9 cells in adults given a choice between sucrose solution and water does not affect water or sucrose consumption, compared to controls.
