Detailed Description

Homozygous adults have small electroretinogram (ERG) responses and slow response termination compared to wild type. The on and off transients are reduced and the mutant flies show a significant reduction in light sensitivity. Intracellular recordings demonstrate that the defect in light response is due to an abnormality in the photoreceptor cells.

Gα49B1/Gα49B961 and Gα49B961/Df(2R)Exel7121 adults show a defective ERG response.

The minimum light intensity needed to induce a prolonged depolarization afterpotential is approximately 420 lux in homozygous flies (compared to approximately 2600 lux in wild type).

Mutants undergo slow light-dependent retinal degeneration.

Comments

Expression of Gα49B1.hs using heat shock rescues the electroretinogram defects of Gα49B961 flies.

Expression of Gα49BH212A.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF rescues deactivation kinetics but not electroretinogram amplitude in Gα49B961 flies.
