    Optogenetic activation (using Cnoc\ChR1::Csub\ChRCsChrimson.IVS.20xUAS.Venus with 624 nm (red) light) of Scer\GAL40273-G4 cells significantly increases preference for areas with red light and navigation to areas previously associated with illumination, compared to controls; restricting activation to smaller subsets of Scer\GAL40273-G4 cells can reduce the preference for red light (using Ecol\lexAChAT-MI04508-TlexA:QFAD.0, but not Ecol\lexAGMR61H03, to drive Scer\GAL80IVS.WPRE.8xlexAop) and/or reduce the navigation toward areas previously associated with illumination (using Ecol\lexAGMR61H03, Ecol\lexAChAT-MI04508-TlexA:QFAD.0 or Ecol\lexAp65.Trh to drive Scer\GAL80IVS.WPRE.8xlexAop or using Scer\GAL80ple.PK, but not Scer\GAL4GMR58E02), relative to activation of all Scer\GAL40273-G4 cells; activation of the combined set of Scer\GAL40273-G4 cells and Scer\GAL4Gr66a.PD cells also increases preference for areas with red light, compared to controls; activation with 527 nm (green) light of Scer\GAL40273-G4 cells increases preference for areas with green light, compared to controls.

    Optogenetic inhibition (using Gthe\ACR1UAS.d.EYFP with 527 nm (green) light) of Scer\GAL40273-G4 cells results in avoidance of areas with green light, unlike controls.

    Blocking the output (using shi1.UAS at 33[o]C) of Scer\GAL40273-G4 neurons shortly before and during training significantly impairs long-term olfactory memory in starved flies trained with sucrose, compared to controls.

    Acute thermogenetic activation (using TrpA1UAS.(B).cKa at 33[o]C) of Scer\GAL40273-G4 neurons results in a significant long-term preference for a paired odor (artificial memory) in starved or fed flies, compared to controls; even when flies are fed, this memory persists for at least 7 days.
