Expression of Mmus\Gria1Lc.Scer\UAS in the developing eye, under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.2sev results in a reduction in adult eye size, with a concomitant reduction in the number of ommatidia and interommatidial bristles. Eye cells appear damaged, with a loss of plasma membrane integrity and the emergence of intra-cellular vacuoles. Cellular appearance suggests massive cell death in neuronal and non-neuronal cells in the adult eyes. Mmus\Gria1Lc.Scer\UAS-expressing neurons display positive staining for the necrotic marker propidium iodide, along with other feautres of necrosis, such as mitochondrial defects, elevation of ROS level and an increase in cytoplasmic acidification. Newly-formed ommatidia in the anterior region of Scer\GAL4hs.2sev>Mmus\Gria1Lc.Scer\UAS eye discs are relatively normal. However, in the posterior region, the elav staining is diminished in Mmus\Gria1-positive R3/R4 cells and becomes clumpy in the adjacent neurons, indicating spreading death in adjacent neurons at the larval stage.
