Scer\GAL4ey.PH α-PheRSA456G.Scer\UAS eyes mostly display a regular surface, although a few ommatidia are not properly organized in certain regions. Some individual ones lack photoreceptors, causing ommatidia to be smaller and the retina to display a misaligned pattern.
Animals expressing α-PheRSA456G.Scer\UAS via Scer\GAL4Act5C.PI show normal climbing ability during the first week, but impaired performance in subsequent weeks. They also have a shortened lifespan compared to controls.
Expression via Scer\GAL4en-e16E causes wing vein defects in the adult wing and a small increase in apoptotic cells in the wing disc.

In β-PheRS322/Df(3R)Exel6198 (β-PheRS null) flies rescued with β-PheRS+tLa, Scer\GAL4ey.PH-mediated expression of α-PheRSA456G.Scer\UAS, results in eyes mostly displaying a regular surface, although a few ommatidia are not properly organized in certain regions. Some individual ones lack photoreceptors, causing ommatidia to be smaller and the retina to display a misaligned pattern.
In β-PheRS322/Df(3R)Exel6198 (β-PheRS null) flies rescued with β-PheRSA158W, Scer\GAL4ey.PH-mediated expression of α-PheRSA456G.Scer\UAS results in severe disruption of eye organization - most ommatidia are irregular, the entire eye is smaller and the eye surface is rough. The retina and ommatidia lack regular patterns, shapes and organization because of smaller ommatidia and absence of many cells.
Scer\GAL4Act5C.PI-mediated expression of α-PheRSA456G.Scer\UAS in adults (via use of Scer\GAL80ts.αTub84B) in a β-PheRS322/Df(3R)Exel6198 (β-PheRS null) background rescued with β-PheRS+tLa results in some elav-positive brain (neuronal) cells entering apoptosis. Many more cells enter apoptosis when this background is rescued with β-PheRSA158W.
In β-PheRS322/Df(3R)Exel6198 (β-PheRS null) flies rescued with β-PheRS+tLa or β-PheRSA158W, Scer\GAL4en-e16E-mediated expression of α-PheRSA456G.Scer\UAS results in decreased wing size , and in some wings entire regions of the posterior compartment are missing. In wing discs, the number of apoptotic cells is increased, while cell size is either similar or slightly bigger than controls, suggesting that cell number (proliferation) must be reduced.
In β-PheRS322/Df(3R)Exel6198 (β-PheRS null) flies rescued with β-PheRS+tLa or β-PheRSA158W, Scer\GAL4ppl.PP-mediated expression of α-PheRSA456G.Scer\UAS results in reduced pupariation rates when larvae are raised on Tyrosine-rich (but not alanine- or phenylalanine-rich or standard) food.
