mir-31aKO homozygotes do not exhibit obvious defects in life-span, as compared to controls; their adult brains exhibit transient decreases in the numbers of either total glial cells or astrocytes, but not of cortex glial cells or of ensheathing glial cells, at days 7 and 21, but not at day 2 post eclosion, which is associated with a moderate increase in the proportion of apoptotic glial cells at day 7 post eclosion, as compared to controls; at 7 days post eclosion, their adult brains also show a small but significant decrease in the number of neurons and significant increases in the proportions of either total cells or glial lineage cells undergoing DNA replication, as compared to controls; in lineage-tracing experiments, their adult neuroglia progenitor cells give rise to a significantly increased proportion of glial cells, but not of neurons, as compared to controls.

7 days old mir-31aKO/mir-31aKO.Gal4 transheterozygotes exhibit a significant decrease in the number of adult brain glial cells, as compared to controls.

Brains of mir-31aKO homozygous mutant adults display loss of glial cells over time and at day 7 post-eclosion their number is significantly reduced compared to controls (although the mutant adults emerge with comparable number of brain glia).
