Lst1 mutants are hypoglycemic and short-lived compared to controls. They are also obese: triglyceride content is elevated to 150% of control values. The Insulin Producing Cells are necessary for this obesity as this phenotype is not observed if these cells are electrically silenced (using Scer\GAL4Ilp2.215-1 and Hsap\KCNJ2Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP-EGFP).

Starvation-induced lipid depletion remains fully intact in Lst1 mutants and is even slightly elevated. Mutants then rapidly accumulate triglycerides upon re-feeding and display significant obesity after only 24 hr.
