Marf1null homozygous females are sterile as no egg hatches, despite the same number of eggs being laid and fertilized as in controls. Although ovaries and early stage oocytes display grossly normal morphologies and stage 14 oocytes exhibit proper metaphase I arrest, stage 14 oocytes show abnormal yolk aggregation and fail to localize germ plasm components to the oocyte posterior, and unfertilized eggs fail to show meiotic spindles or polar bodies.
