The cohesin complex forms a ring-like structure which encircles sister chromatids holding them together after DNA replication. Cohesin also has roles in the regulation of gene expression and DNA repair. (Adapted from FBrf0207490).
The cohesin ring is formed by a SMC heterodimer and a kleisin. The regulatory subunit, SA, is required for de novo association of cohesin with chromatin (FBrf0173282).
