Gene/Allele symbols may differ from current usage	al: aristaless Aristae strongly reduced. Postscutellars widely separated and erect but strongly divergent. Scutellum shortened; sternopleurals irregular in size, position, and number; wings slightly bowed downward, narrowed, and pointed; first longitudinal vein raised and thickened. Tarsal claws transformed into bristle-like structures or absent; effect enhanced by presence of th or ssa40a or both [Mglinetz and Ivanova, 1975, Genetika (Moscow) 11, 4: 88-96]. Enhances transformations of AntpNS [Mikuta and Mglinetz, 1978, Genetika (Moscow) 14: 1578-85] and ssa40a; al ssa40a flies exhibit partial transformation of third antennal segment to basitarsus; anomalous outgrowths of distal basitarsus and foreshortening of second and third tarsal joints of thoracic legs; spineless phenotype also enhanced. al females exhibit reduced mating success (Burnet, Connolly, and Dennis, 1971, Anim. Behav. 19: 409-15). RK1. al8 Homozygous lethal; 1% survival in combination with Df(2L)al = Df(2L)21B8-C1;21C8-D1; survivors have reduced aristae, broad thorax, arched wings with incomplete veins, enlarged eyes.

Additional comments	"al" mutant phenotype resembles that reported for "tg" mutants. Since "tg" is genetically closely linked to "al" it may be allelic to "al". (Schneitz et al., 1993)

	In the leg, al is only required for the growth and differentiation of the tip of the leg and not for the formation of the proximo-distal axis. (Campbell and Tomlinson, 1998) Genetic combinations with mutants of nub cause additive phenotypes. (Cifuentes and Garcia-Bellido, 1997) Ectopic expression of hh and dpp is able to induce expression of al, which is proposed to influence the proximal-distal specification of adult appendages. (Capdevila and Guerrero, 1994) The presumptive tips of both the leg and wing are characterized by the close association of cells expressing wg, dpp and al. Ectopic expression of wg can induce both ectopic al expression and a duplication of the proximodistal axis, but only in regions with high levels of dpp. (Campbell et al., 1993) al gene has been cloned, identified and characterised. (Schneitz et al., 1993) al is a prd-type homeobox gene. (Schneitz and Noll, 1990)
